“Too much, and not enough,” Jamie says to Claire when describing what Randall did to him, and it’s an apt summary of the episode as a whole. Murtagh’s feelings towards Jamie are reassuringly transparent, even when they are expressed in Gaelic. His tender words to Jamie when he wraps him in his plaid and carries him out, the chiding and haranguing of a worried parent and finally, the gruff reproach of a man disappointed by one he respects. Duncan Lacroix has done the impossible in making a beloved and iconic book character even more so. Special mention to another practical, devoted soul: Murtagh. The Lord knows her truth, he says, and whatever her sins, she must have faith in that they will be forgiven. Father Anselm wonders aloud if her experiences constitute a miracle, and at her disbelief, offers her the gentle reassurance of a man of God. Her emotional release is a humanizing moment that is lovely in its vulnerability, especially because her confession is met with unexpected grace. She has been addressing the worst of Jamie’s hurts while holding herself together, but at the end of her story she tearfully admits to the monk that she blames herself for the great harm that has come upon him. Claire’s heart is not only that of a healer, but as a wartime nurse, it is also that of a soldier.
